Lesson10
I really don't have 1 big discovery.  It was great being able to use the different electronic resources. Some of the resources we offer through our own library catalog. It is amazing what a library card can offer besides books, magazines and audio materials. As we keep moving into a digital world it is even equally important to make the public aware of the resources.  When making a new library card it is important to inform the patron what is available online.  Posters, brochures, city tv channel, classes and/or library, on site demostrations, online catalogs, and staff, can promote the electronic resources.
Libraries offer many resources and it can only get better! I really enjoyed doing this challenge.  It was a challenge for me to find work time to do this along with my other duties.  I know each electronic resource offers a lot.  It was fun using them and when time allows I may explore even more.   Thanks!

Lesson 9

Ancestry Library search brought up my last 3 addresses and my current address.  It does have the incorrect spelling of my current  street address.  I was unable to bring up my marriage license.  It brought up a lot of people with my same name  at a lot of other states but not SD.  I even did an exact name search and it still could not bring up my marriage license.

Heritage Quest search was on the Dakota Territories. I found a book titled the History of Dakota Territory.  "First White Settlements on the Missouri Slope."  It takes place in the City of Yankton in SD.  An Indian chief referred as "A Man that was struck by Ree," and states the name William Penn Lyman.  This book had detailed information and I just read very little.
Interesting information.  I tried searching about the South Dakota School for the Deaf but couldn't get any information to come up.  I have never used Heritage Quest before am glad I was able to try using it.

Sandborn Maps  I looked up Sioux Falls.  The map I brought up was Sioux Falls November 1911. I saw the SD School for the Deaf Mute and it was on N. Asylum Ave. The words "deaf mute," and "asylum" are not words I would use today.  The maps were OK!   The map views are small, but can be  "zoomed" into. It is a nice resource.  It is not at all like google maps!

Lesson 8 World Cat
I have used World Cat a lot with my job.  The phrase I searched was preschool storytime.  The first title it brought up was Early Literacy Storytimes @ your library Partnering with caregivers for success. Siouxland Libraries actually owned this book along with 915 other libraries. When I clicked on the author it brought up other books the author wrote.

Click on subject gives more choices  Reading with 83% to Language Arts & Discipline 4%.

I have brought up the full record of, How Do Dinosaurs Say I love You.
The author is Jane Yolen and it gives the illustrator's name too.  the full record has a wealth of information such as publication, summary of the story, 8 additonal subjects, gene/form, notes that stated audience range, vendor, material type.

When I click on the author's name it brings up additional books the author writes.

Other First Search Indexes table offers millions of bibliographic records.  It includes records representing 400 languages, and I noticed it current information.

Oaister searching brought up endless information on SD.  It shows how to search with more terms, limit results, advance serach , and refine your search.  It has books, articles, and journals.  the "keyword" search brought up 13,704 results.  Would want to limit the results. I have never used this before.
Oaister is a place to get it all.  It seems to me it has endless information.

Camio search was wondeful.  I have never used this before.   It showed 63 works results from the word "sioux."  It showed the image, title, creator, date, type, museum that the item was at.  You can click on image view and bring up a high resolution full image.  This would be great for artist, locals wanting see artwork in the comfort of the library.  You can get additional education information on a link view and type link to view too. Wow!  This was neat!

Lesson 7 Ebooks. Constitution Day titles are US Govenment Info: Policies & Sources, The Great Father:  The US Government & American Indians, Reader's Comapnion to American History , Bill of Rights, and French Revolution: A History would be some recommended ebooks.

I searched Nebraska.  This brought up 58 titles of ebooks about American Indians.

Lesson 7 Ebooks searched the topic on storytelling. I had 74 titles show up with the initial search. Next, I limited the search to subject. This changed the amount of books form 74 to 11.

I have not used this site a lot.  It was great using it.
Lesson 6 Gale Virtual Reference Library
From the title list I picked the  1900's The Way We Lived.  I looked at Bubble Gum, and the World Fair.
I could do a contest on blowing the biggest bubble from gum.  A trivia contest could be done from the facts on gum.

Do a "Blast in the Past," day at the library.  Make exhibits showing telephones, phonographs, televisions and wheels in the past and that public learned of these things by going the the World Fair.

"What food have zinc in them?"  From a source Food Pyramid I saw meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts.  have zinc in them.

Literary Criticism of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn talked about deadpan humor and interpretations of  hypothetical American.

Lesson 5 Proquest
I did a basic search on preschool storytelling.  It took me to an article about software for storytelling. Reading aloud to children increases comfort with words and stories.  It also adds to extensive vocabualry and better comphrehension.  Computers can never replace a book.  Software used for storytelling helps interact with the characters in a story and helps children create their own stories.

I looked at lucky mom's blog.  She had a very specific topic, Teachscape.  She shared more specific information than I did.  My topic was so general and actually it was preschool story telling.  It brought up a varied amount of topics to choose from.

From the publications tab I typed Librarian.  It brough up 2 Publications Distant Librarian with full text articles form July 21, 2009-present.  Teacher Librarian with Nov/Dec. 1996- present with full text articles was the other publication.  I went to one publication and viewed the articles. I didn't read any of the articles but it was fun seeing all the article titles.

I am enjoying my time spent on the challenge electronic resources, unfortunately, I have not had time to view other blogs. This is the first time I have done a class like this and it has been fun.  I am still trying to catch up on my assignment. It is time for lesson 6.

Lesson 4 SIRS Discovers
I have never used this resource before.  It is a nice resource to get articles, newspapers, magazine articles, graphics, and web finder.  However, this sight shows a lot of text and not very inviting for a struggling reader or set up to inviter the user to explore more.  It is a good tool for research.  I thought the World Book was more inviting for children to explore more.  I did like the feature of reading levels assigned to each resource.

Brazil is the country I researched. Resources is where I found the country facts. I'm not so sure anyone could figure out this is where you get basic facts.  Next, I opened a magazine article.  It was about the 2016 Olympics that will be in Rio.  It has a read along feature which is very nice and you could even download the article on to a mp3.  SIRS has a wealth of information and many nice features it just seems a little overwehelming seeing so much to pick from all at once.  It is great for research and getting it done!
